Mel-Volkman-Fine-Art-Ceramics-Maine.png

An Artist & Ceramicist based in a cozy town just off the coast of Maine.

I work out of my c. 1800 cottage barn studio, crafted from ancient wood and clad in cedar siding, nestled peacefully beyond an enchanting willow tree and what's left of an old stone wall. My studio comes to life as golden sunlight streams through its aged paneled windows, casting a warm glow as the shadows of the willow's weeping branches dance across the walls.

The essence of my work blooms from the quiet, natural beauty of wabi-sabi.

A philosophy that invites us to slow down, notice the details, and appreciate the raw, unrefined beauty of the world around us. Rooted in this perspective, my approach focuses on honoring the fleeting and imperfect nature of life. This philosophy naturally guides my approach, resulting in soulful work that reflects the care, attention, and humanity of its creation.

Beyond philosophy, my fascination with earth and the mysteries of the universe breathes life into my artistic work, seeking to evoke feelings of wonder and a sense of awe for the universe.

I began my artistic career over 15 years ago as a professional editor and portrait photographer between Nashville and California.

This experience shaped my sharp eye for detail and deepened my passion for storytelling through imagery. Over time, my interests evolved, leading me to explore pottery and oil painting. These hands-on mediums gave me new ways to express my creativity, inspired by my love for light, texture, and composition, and allowed my artistic voice to continue growing in meaningful ways.

My process is deeply personal and tactile, allowing me to connect closely with the materials I work with. This connection is evident in my work — each piece tells its own story, shaped by the moments and choices that make it soulful and one of a kind. What might appear as flaws actually give my creations character, reminding you that they were made by a person, not a machine. These little imperfections stand in contrast to the perfect, sterile look of mass production or the cold exactness of machines. Instead, they bring warmth, individuality, and the natural beauty of handmade work.

I'm humbled to be sharing my work within private and public spaces throughout the world — United States, Germany, Sweden, United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Australia to name a few.

When I'm not creating, you'll likely find me..

In deep thought, perhaps contemplating the nature of time, spending time with my small family, attempting to keep pace with my ever-growing collection of books, or gardening and caring for my c. 1800 colonial home and cottage barn studio. Nestled amidst a centuries-old apple orchard and wildflower meadows, and just a short drive from the misty coast of Maine, I find endless inspiration in the beauty of my surroundings through the changing seasons.
