Mel-Volkman-Fine-Art-Ceramics-Maine.png

Mel Volkman is a multidisciplinary artist based in a cozy town just off the coast of Maine.

She works out of her c. 1800 cottage barn studio, crafted from ancient wood and clad in cedar siding, nestled peacefully beyond an enchanting willow tree and what's left of an old stone wall. The studio comes to life as golden sunlight streams through its aged paneled windows, casting a warm glow as the shadows of the willow's weeping branches dance across the walls.

The essence of her work blooms from the quiet, natural beauty of wabi-sabi.

A philosophy that invites us to slow down, notice the details, and appreciate the raw, unrefined beauty of the world around us. Rooted in this perspective, her approach focuses on honoring the fleeting and imperfect nature of life. This philosophy naturally guides her approach, resulting in soulful work that reflects the care, attention, and humanity of its creation.

Beyond philosophy, her fascination with the cosmos and the mysteries of the universe breathes life into her artistic work, seeking to evoke feelings of wonder and a sense of awe for the universe.

Mel began her artistic career over 15 years ago as a professional editor and portrait photographer between Nashville and California.

This experience shaped her sharp eye for detail and deepened her passion for storytelling through imagery. Over time, her interests evolved, leading her to explore pottery and oil painting. These hands-on mediums gave her new ways to express her creativity, inspired by her love for light, texture, and composition, and allowed her artistic voice to continue growing in meaningful ways.

Her process is deeply personal and tactile, allowing her to connect closely with the materials she works with. This connection is evident in her work — each piece tells its own story, shaped by the moments and choices that make it soulful and one of a kind. What might appear as flaws actually give her creations character, reminding you that they were made by a person, not a machine. These little imperfections stand in contrast to the perfect, sterile look of mass production or the cold exactness of machines. Instead, they bring warmth, individuality, and the natural beauty of handmade work.

She's humbled to be sharing her work within private and public spaces throughout the world — United States, Germany, Sweden, United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Australia to name a few.

When she's not creating, you'll likely find her..

In deep thought, perhaps contemplating the nature of time, attempting to keep pace with her ever-growing collection of books, or gardening and caring for her c. 1800 colonial home and cottage barn studio. Nestled amidst a centuries-old apple orchard and wildflower meadows, and just a short drive from the misty coast of Maine, she finds endless inspiration in the beauty of her surroundings through the changing seasons.
