Mel-Volkman-Fine-Art-Ceramics-Maine-31.png

Mel is an artist based in a cozy town just off the coast of Maine.

She works out of her c. 1800 cottage barn studio, crafted from ancient wood and clad in cedar siding, nestled peacefully beyond an enchanting willow tree and what's left of an old stone wall. Her studio comes to life as golden sunlight streams through its aged paneled windows, casting a warm glow as the shadows of the willow's weeping branches dance across the walls.

"Nostalgic", “Earthy", “Haunting” and "Poetic" are the words most often used to describe her work.

The essence of her work blooms from the quiet, natural beauty of wabi-sabi. A philosophy that invites us to slow down, notice the details, and appreciate the raw, unrefined beauty of the world around us. Rooted in this perspective, her approach focuses on honoring the fleeting and imperfect nature of life.

Beyond philosophy, her fascination with earth and the mysteries of the universe breathes life into her artistic work, seeking to evoke feelings of wonder and a sense of awe for the universe.

She began her artistic career over 15 years ago as a professional editor and portrait photographer between Nashville and California.

This experience shaped her sharp eye for detail and deepened her passion for storytelling through imagery. Over time, her interests led her to explore pottery and oil painting. These hands-on mediums gave her more ways to express her creativity, inspired by her love for light, texture, and composition, and allowed her artistic voice to continue growing in meaningful ways.

She's humbled to be sharing her work within private and public spaces throughout the world — United States, Germany, Sweden, United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Australia to name a few.

When she's not creating, you'll likely find her..

In deep thought, perhaps contemplating the nature of time, attempting to keep pace with her ever-growing collection of books, or gardening and caring for her c. 1800 colonial home and cottage barn studio. Nestled amidst a centuries-old apple orchard and wildflower meadows, and just a short drive from the misty coast of Maine, she finds endless inspiration in the beauty of her surroundings through the changing seasons.
