Mel Volkman is a Maine-based Fine Artist
Working predominantly in oils, she values the patience and intention this medium requires, allowing her to connect deeply with her subjects and give them the care and attention they deserve. She's focused on still life, botanical, and landscape subjects, often gathering inspiration for her botanical pieces from her own gardens. This practice forges a deep and intimate connection between her life and her art.
Mel works from her c. 1800 cottage barn studio, nestled amidst gardens, wildflower meadows and a centuries-old apple orchard, just off the coast of Maine. The rich history and natural beauty of her surroundings provide endless inspiration throughout the changing seasons.
Her studio, crafted from ancient wood and clad in cedar siding, rests peacefully beyond an enchanting willow tree and the remnants of an old stone wall. Golden sunlight streams through its aged paneled windows, casting a warm glow as the shadows of the willow's weeping branches dance across the walls.
Deeply moved by the passage of time and the natural world, Mel's work invites viewers to slow down and notice what might otherwise be overlooked in the hurried pace of modern life. For her, painting is not merely about replicating what is seen but about uncovering and preserving the essence of her subjects, giving them a sense of permanence so they can be admired and appreciated a bit longer.
Through her art, she creates a space for reflection and connection, encouraging a mindful engagement with the world and reminding us to pause and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.
Mel's work is held in private collections and public spaces throughout the world, including the United States, Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Australia.
